The Lobby

The East Wing was originally built in 1902 as a formal entrance for party guests to the White House. The Family Theater was originally created as a cloak room to hold the many coats and hats of guests. Today, the Lobby continues to be the entrance for most formal event guests as well as tourists.

The Lobby is a long hall that is richly paneled and leads west, past a security desk, up a short flight of stairs (and prominent wheelchair ramp), to the Garden Room.
